How To Check If A Subwoofer Is Blown With Multimeter

The most typical causes that cause the subwoofers and speakers to blow are given below.

  1. A typical speaker or any subwoofer will most likely blow under high-power transmission. 
  2. Subwoofers are also prone to blowing if high RMS power is supplied to them for a long time. 

Under both of these conditions, the subs will produce a distorted sound and in severe cases, no sound will be produced at all. If the subwoofers are producing no sound, then the blown subs can be verified by touching the coil (voice coil) of the speakers. If the subs are not blown and the audio is cut off due to faulty or inappropriate settings, then the voice coil will be moving. But if the subs have blown, the voice coil will be static at its position and no movement will be detected. 

However, if the subs are producing a little amount of sound but it is distorted you cannot verify if the subs are blown or not simply by touching the voice coil. This is because the voice coil will be changing its position even if the distorted sound is produced. In this situation, you can rely on a multimeter to verify if the subs are blown or not.

Checking A Subwoofer Using A Multimeter:

To verify if the subwoofers are blown or not, you can check the resistance of the voice coil. Follow the given instructions to check the resistance of the voice coil ad decide on the functioning of your subs.

  • Power off the subwoofers and completely unplug them from the power supply.
  • Remove all the cables and wires that are connected to your subwoofers. This includes all audio inputs and power cables.
  • Remove the enclosing box of your subwoofers.
  • Now bring out your multimeter and connect its positive terminal to the positive terminal of the voice coil of your subs.
  • Similarly, connect the negative terminals of the subwoofer and multimeter probe.
  • After connecting both terminals, turn on the multimeter and check its resistance. 

How To Interpret Resistance:

  • Damaged voice coils will give no resistance at all.
  • If the resistance reading changes abruptly from one extreme to another, it is a strong indication of a blown subwoofer. In reality, a completely damaged voice coil will give such abrupt resistance readings.
  • If the shown resistance lies above 1 OHM. It means that the voice coil of your subwoofers is safe and sound and no issue is detected at all. If that is the case with your subwoofers then it means distortion in the sound is caused by some software fault and no problem lies with the hardware of your subwoofers.

Speakers and subwoofers are delicate gadgets that can be blown very easily. The most obvious symbol of blown subwoofers is that distorted sound will be produced by the subs.
