Are you one of those customers who tend to look for waterproof or water-resistant products? There is a growing lot of customers who are quite infatuated with knowing the waterproofing status of the device before deciding on its purchase.

This is a good thing as a precaution is better than a cure. But here comes a question of how one can know about the waterproofing or water-resistant status of the device. The technology has developed so rapidly that a water-proof body is not the only necessity and manufacturers have introduced snow-proof, dust-proof, shock-proof, and weather-proof products in the market.

IPX WaterProof Rating | IPX4, IPX5, IPX6, IPX7, IPX8 Ratings

Weather-proof and shockproof products are more commonly associated with mechanical devices but if you are heading for the purchase of any electronic gadget like a smartphone, speaker, soundbar, or any other similar device, knowing its resistance to water and dust is something that should not be compromised.

So, swiftly moving towards how to know the resistance of devices against water and moisture, certification bodies have launched an IPX rating system. IPS stands for Ingress Protection which certifies the protection of claiming devices for liquid and solid protection. IP being an International Protection code is issued by the certification or licensing bodies and device manufacturers have no say in this rating.

IPS Waterproof Rating:

Ingress Protection or IP rating varies from IPX0 to IPX 8 where S stands for the solid object projection while the last digit (4th) gives an idea about the liquid or waterproof status.

Before heading for the profound review you have to know what the IPX variables are symbolizing in reality.

I  = Ingress

P = Protection

X =   Solid Rating/ No Testing against solid objects

4th Digit (0-8) = Waterproof rating

The 4th digit ranging from 0 to 8 shows the strength of waterproof protection.  For instance, if you have bought a device that claims the IPX8 certification, it can be fully submerged in water since it shows the completely waterproof design of the device. At the same time, it also shows that the device is not tested for solid object protection.

In a nutshell, a device with an IPX8 rating can be fully submerged in water but shouldn’t be handled carelessly with solid objects like throwing on the floor.

Significance Of IPX ratings:

IPX ratings are critical for determining the location of use and the handling of the device. If you know about the IPX rating of your device you can make an informed decision about how to use your product and more importantly where to use your product.

For example, if you are using a device with an IPX0 waterproof rating then you would be aware to protect your device from even a little bit of water splashes as the device has negligible or no protection against water splashes.

Suppose you don’t know about the IPX rating of your smartphone and accidentally keep it in reach of a water jug which makes it prone to danger. But if you know the IPX rating of the smartphone you would be alert before placing it near the water jug that whether it will be detrimental or safe for your gadgets.

IPX ratings are more crucial for outdoor products that not only require a waterproof rating but also resistance against weather, snow, dust, etc. if you are buying products for your camping activity, let’s say you got yourself, portable speakers, for outdoor use. It is a must for those portable speakers to be at least waterproof to protect against rain or pools. If the speakers can protect from dust, weather, and shock, they will be considered the cherries on top of your favorite cake.

In-Depth Review Of IPX Waterproof Rating: From IPX4 To IPX8

Now that you are aware of the importance of IPX ratings and how to study them, you must be looking forward to knowing which rating is good for you. For instance, if an IPX8 device will be ideal for you or an IPX4 device can make do for you.

To resolve this curiosity you have to know which IPX rating stands for how much protection and then you can determine how much protection your device requires. After deciding on these two critical factors you can decide the ideal value of the IPX rating of your device.

To tackle this query, we have provided you with a detailed review of the IPX rating and the associated protection of the devices in the coming paragraphs.

IPX Waterproof Rating Chart:

As we are mainly focused on the waterproof rating of the devices let us carefully examine the IPX waterproof rating chart.

IPXO: No Protection is claimed

IPX1: Negligible Protection against vertical water splashes

IPX2: Protect against water falling vertically at an angle of 15 degrees

IPX3: Protect against water falling vertically at an angle of 60 degrees

IPX4: Protect against water splashes falling at any angle

IPX5: Low-Pressure water protection

IPX6: High-pressure water protection

IPX7: Submergible for 30 minutes, in 1-meter deep water

IPX8: Can be fully submerged in deep water for long hours

In addition to these waterproof IPX ratings, there is an IPXX rating for devices as well. This IPXX rating is claimed for those devices that are not tested for either liquid or solid protection.

IPX4 Rating:

If you are using a device that claims an IPX4 rating or intend to buy one with this rating, you have to keep in mind that this IPX rating makes it resistant to water splashes from all angles. In other words, your device can stand a little amount of water that is accidentally slipped on your smart device like a smartphone from any angle.

IPX5 Rating:

IPX5 is an interesting waterproof rating and it makes the device impenetrable by jets of water under low pressure. For instance rain. IPX5 devices are fully waterproof for rain or other low-pressure water condition. Furthermore, these devices can endure continuous jets of water unlike the minute splashes in IPX4 ratings.

Keep in mind that IPX5 devices are not tested for solid object protection and will also not stand against high-pressure conditions like falling in a running stream of water.

IPX6 Rating:

IPX6 devices are designed to resist High-pressure water jets but are not tested for solids. These devices can be used anywhere the exposed water but shouldn’t be submerged as these are not fully submergible devices.

IPX7 Rating:

IPX7 is a high waterproof rating and it makes the device submergible under 1 meter of water for about 30 minutes.  These devices are high-quality devices that can be used anywhere near beaches, pools, and anywhere where water is plenty. But these gadgets cannot stand being submerged for long hours or depth more than 1 meter underwater.

IPX8 Rating:

IPX8 devices are the highest protected devices against water. These can be fully submerged for long durations in deep water and are not tested for solid protection.

Bottom Line:

IPX Ratings are a critical factor for determining the safety and protection against odds of locations. By knowing the IPX rating of your device you can be alert to the dangers of your vicinity on the device being used there. IPX waterproof ratings range from 0 to 8 from minimal to highest waterproof protection.
